Red Sox Injury Update: Rusney Castillo day to day in AFL with bruised thumb

By on 10/22/2014 07:00:00 AM

The Boston Red Sox won just 71 games in 2014 following a World Series Championship in 2013. At 18th in the Major Leagues in runs scored and 23rd in team ERA, the Red Sox need improvement in both phases of the game next season to compete for a playoff spot. One player the Red Sox are keeping an eye on this offseason is Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo, who is currently listed as day-to-day with a bruised thumb.

As reported by Alex Speier of, the Red Sox sent Castillo to the Arizona Fall League in hopes of getting him some much needed at bats and experience. That goal is to get him ready for an every day job with the Red Sox in 2015. The plan is not going smoothly, as Castillo left Monday's game due to a bruised hand after being jammed by a pitch. He is currently listed as day-to-day.

Castillo has 125 plate appearances overall this season with the Red Sox, the Minor Leagues and in the Arizona Fall League. The Red Sox are looking for Castillo, who signed a lucrative $72.5 million contract through 2020, to get 200 plate appearances total through the winter league.

Catillo hit .333 with two home runs and six RBI in 36 at bats with the Red Sox. The 27-year old outfielder from Cuba played for Ciego de Avila of the Cuban National Series from 2008 through 2012.
