Red Wings Injury Update: Jimmy Howard placed on IR

By on 10/18/2014 08:34:00 PM

Detroit Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard is out with a sore groin, as reported by Ansar Khan of He has been placed on the 48-hour goaltender injured reserve list, and is eligible to return to the lineup on Tuesday.

It's unclear when exactly the injury occurred. Howard stopped 23 of 24 shots in a 4-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday, so it's likely after that game.

Howard has appeared in four games for the team this season. He has a 2-1-1 record, posting a 1.72 GAA and a solid .934 save percentage.

Jonas Gustavsson started on Saturday night, and the team recalled Petr Mrazek to serve as backup.

General manager Ken Holland suggested Howard's injury wasn't too serious and that he should be ready to go for Tuesday's game against the Montreal Canadiens. However, groin injuries are always a major concern for goaltenders. The situation will have to monitored closely.
