Royals Injury Update: Kyle Zimmer undergoes shoulder surgery

By on 10/31/2014 03:45:00 PM

Kansas City Royals pitching prospect Kyle Zimmer has undergone a minor procedure to repair damage in his shoulder, reports Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star. Zimmer cut short what turned out to be his final start in the Arizona Fall League because of tightness, and although it appeared to be just a precaution at the time, McCullough tweeted that Zimmer has now had a procedure to address a debridement in his right shoulder:

McCullough had previously reported that there were no issues with Zimmer's MRI results, but that arthroscopic surgery was a possibility as it would allow doctors to investigate what was causing the discomfort.

Zimmer missed a significant portion of the minor league season because of injuries, including a lat strain, so the Royals will hope this does not cost him any more development time. He threw just 4 2/3 innings in Rookie ball after reaching Double-A in 2013. If Zimmer can return in the spring at full health, the Royals will have an eye on calling him up at some point in 2015.
