Saints Injury Update: Jimmy Graham returns to practice

By on 10/17/2014 07:47:00 PM

The New Orleans Saints' tight end, Jimmy Graham, could have a chance to play this week. The tight end returned to full team drills as a limited participant during Thursday's practice. The Saints' head coach, Sean Payton, said "Were still optimistic on him." This was reported by Mike Triplett of

Graham's status is still very questionable for this week. This was the first time he was able to participate in full team drills since he suffered a shoulder injury against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
If Graham is able to play this week against the Detroit Lions, chances are it would be for only a limited number of snaps.

This would not be the first time that Graham would be used in that capacity. Last year, while recovering from a plantar fasciitis injury, Graham played only 18 snaps and caught two touchdowns. The Saints used him mostly in red-zone situations and it payed off.

For now, it's probably going to be a game-time decision on whether Graham will play this week. The good news overall for the Saints is that he is recovering. The injury does not appear to be long-term.

If he is not available to play, the Saints will split up Graham's targets between the back-up tight end and wide receivers. Drew Brees is a master at spreading the ball around and getting as many players as he can involved in the offense. Let's face it, no one on the Saints' offense will take the place of Graham. The tight end so far this year has 34 receptions for 376 yards and three touchdowns. Just his presence on the field alone demands attention on every snap.
