Stars Injury Update: Sergei Gonchar out 3-5 weeks with ankle injury

Dallas Stars defenseman Sergei Gonchar will miss the start of the regular season as he's expected to be out for 3-5 weeks with a fractured ankle, as reported by Mark Stepneski of the team's official website.

The injury occurred when the 40-year-old veteran was hit by a puck during Tuesday's preseason game against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Gonchar had already missed part of training camp with an ear laceration.

Gonchar's career has been on the decline in recent years. In the 2013-14 season, he appeared in 76 games for the Stars. He accumulated only 22 points, 14 of which came on the powerplay. He averaged 17:36 per game, his lowest average in years.

The Stars have several young defenseman that will have to step up during Gonchar's absence. At 40 years old and in the last year of his contract, this may very well be his last season in the NHL. We may see his role reduced as the season goes on, but he should remain an important part of the team's powerplay.
