Tigers Injury Update: Miguel Cabrera could have ankle surgery

By on 10/15/2014 12:00:00 PM

The Detroit Tigers head into the off season having lost three straight to the Baltimore Orioles in the ALDS to end their season. The Tigers scored just 10 in their three games against the Orioles following a regular season in which they ranked second in runs scored. On the injury front, first baseman Miguel Cabrera, who has been dealing with ankle issues, could have surgery to remove a spur in his ankle.

As reported by Chris Iott of MLive.com, Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said on Tuesday that a decision has yet to be made on whether or not Cabrera will have surgery on his right ankle. Cabrera will be further examined next week.

Surgery is nothing new for Cabrera, who underwent core muscle surgery last off season. Although Cabrera didn't speak to the media much about his health, there's no question that injuries affected his power, as his home run total dropped to 25 after back-to-back 44 home run seasons.

The injuries affected Cabrera's performance at times, but he was still effective in September and in the playoffs, as Dombrowski noted.
"You saw that he was the player of the month in September in the American League. It hurt him at times worse than others, because it was there and he would do something to jar it, and it would hurt him. There's no question that that did bother him, but you saw in the postseason he still swung the bat well."
Cabrera, a 12-year Major League veteran, his .313 with 25 home runs and 109 RBI this season. He's had nine seasons of 30 or more home runs and 11 consecutive seasons with 100 or more RBI. Cabrera has played for the Marlins and Tigers and has a career batting average of .320 with 390 home runs and 1,369 RBI.
