Tigers Injury Update: Rajai Davis exits early

By on 10/03/2014 03:00:00 PM

Despite being deemed healthy enough to play in the second game of the ALDS against the Baltimore Orioles on Friday, Detroit Tigers outfielder Rajai Davis could only make it to the fourth inning before being replaced. Chris Iott of reports that Davis was replaced by pinch-runner Ezequiel Carrera after hitting a single into the left field corner. Carrera remained in center field in Davis' place.

The official line on Davis' injury was simply 'tightness' but it seems almost certain that he has not recovered from the pelvic sprain that clearly bothered him during Game One. Iott notes that Davis was evaluated pregame to see whether he could play or not after admitting to getting tighter as the temperature dropped over the course of that first game.

The injury is technically known as a pubic symphysis sprain. Davis has not been moving well and clearly prevented the veteran from turning that single into a double before his exit, as Iott writes. The Tigers will have a day off on Saturday but given that Davis has clearly not been able to shake the problem despite several days off since he sustained it over the weekend, Detroit will have to think hard about starting him on Sunday. Carrera later misplayed a ball in center, allowing Nelson Cruz to reach base and bringing manager Brad Ausmus out to remove Justin Verlander from the game.
