49ers Injury Update: Patrick Willis placed on IR

By on 11/13/2014 10:02:00 AM

San Francisco 49eers veteran LB Patrick Willis was placed on the Injured Reserve list on Monday due to a persisting left toe injury, ending his 2014 season permanently. Willis will soon undergo surgery in order to repair his toe.

The news was reported via the San Francisco 49ers team website early on Tuesday.

According to, "Patrick Willis made that bitter, yet forward-thinking decision to turn off his motor on Tuesday. The San Francisco 49ers announced that the All-Pro linebacker would be placed on the Injured Reserve List and undergo season-ending surgery on his nagging left big toe, which has bothered him for several seasons."

The eight-year veteran has averaged over 97 combined tackles per season along with five tackles for loss and two forced fumbles every single year. This season Willis has recorded 34 combined tackles to go along with five passes defended.

Willis will join NaVorro Bowman as well as many other San Francisco defensive players who have sustained injuries.

In Willis's place will be rookie linebacker Chris Borland out of the University of Wisconsin. This season Borland has been outstanding, recording 50 combined tackles, a sack, a fumble recovered as well as five tackles for loss. He will be faced with some big challenges down the stretch, but I believe he can handle it.

In terms of Willis, his unrelenting passion for the game keeps his head up as a return to the field is quite a ways away.

Per, "“The sooner we can get it done, the sooner I can get back into rehabbing and get back to form,” Willis said. “It’s going to take a while, but I’m optimistic. I like to say I’m one of the hardest working guys in this universe, on this planet.”
