Colorado Avalanche left winger Alex Tanguay left Thursday night's game against the Washington Capitals and was taken to hospital for a jaw injury.

Tanguay sustained an injury to his right jaw after he was hit by a slap shot from Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin, according to the Toronto Sun. Tanguay managed to get a stick on Ovechkin's shot from the left circle, causing the puck to ramp up and hit him directly in the face.

Tanguay immediately dropped to the ice, but was able to get up and skate to the Avalanche locker room where he was then taken to the hospital via ambulance.

Tanguay has 11 points (seven goals, four assists) so far this season.
