Cardinals Injury Update: Peter Bourjos undergoes hip surgery

By on 11/07/2014 04:00:00 PM

St. Louis Cardinals center fielder Peter Bourjos underwent hip surgery on Oct. 21 to address an impingement and repair cartilage damage, reports Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

Team officials described Bourjos' hip pain as “chronic” and said that it caused discomfort for him over the second half of the season. Bourjos has already started his rehab and expects to be ready for spring training.

Bourjos hit .231/.294/.348 in 294 plate appearances in his first season in St. Louis after coming over in the offseason with right fielder Randal Grichuk in exchange for third baseman David Freese. Despite struggling with the bat in limited playing time, Bourjos totaled 1.6 WAR due to his strong fielding and baserunning.

General manager John Mozeliak said the Cardinals expect to have Bourjos back in 2015. Bourjos will again contend for playing time in center with Jon Jay, who was far better at the plate last season, posting a 115 wRC+.

Bourjos might also be able to bring back a nice return in a trade, although the hip surgery may decrease his value slightly for the time being.
