Chargers Injury Update: Philip Rivers playing through bruised ribs

By on 11/17/2014 11:00:00 AM

The San Diego Chargers beat the Oakland Raiders on Sunday, but quarterback Philip Rivers - who was already banged up - took several big hits during the victory. Rivers didn't leave the game at any point, but only managed 193 passing yards and one touchdown in their 13-6 victory.

After the game, tight end Antonio Gates told reporters that Rivers has "a very severe rib injury, so he's been toughing it out these last three or four weeks." This is a surprising revelation as the Chargers have not disclosed any such injury. It does, however, offer an explanation as to the poor game Rivers had against the Miami Dolphins in week nine prior to the Chargers' bye, completing just 12 of 23 passes for 138 yards, with no touchdowns and three interceptions.

The injury does not seem to be serious enough to cause Rivers to miss next week's game against the St. Louis Rams. For what it's worth, Rivers was quoted as saying, "I'm no more banged up than any other quarterback in the league. All good." Rivers is as tough as they come, and has not missed a game since taking over as the Chargers' starter in 2006.

Considering the tough defenses that Rivers faces over the Chargers' last six games, he might already be off your radar for fantasy purposes, but until he shows that he is healthy, look for other options to fill your quarterback slot.
