Chargers Injury Update: Philip Rivers will play Week 12

By on 11/18/2014 02:45:00 PM

San Diego Chargers tight end Antonio Gates caused a stir after Sunday's win over the Oakland Raiders, suggesting that quarterback Philip Rivers has been playing through a significant rib injury in recent weeks. Chargers head coach Mike McCoy denied that Rivers has a rib issue when speaking to the media on Monday, while further confirming that his quarterback will play in Week 12 against the St. Louis Rams.

The numbers back up something being not quite right with Rivers recently, with six touchdowns and six interceptions over his last four games and 205 passing yards or less three times in that span. Compared to his first six games of the season, when he had 15 touchdown passes and just two interceptions while completing more than 69 percent of his passes, Rivers is clearly going through a slump that may be driven by an injury.

Rivers has not missed a game this season, or any practice time if you believe McCoy, and as long as his injury doesn't get dramatically worse he won't be sitting out anytime soon. The Chargers are surely hoping they don't have to turn elsewhere as they compete for a playoff spot, with Kellen Clemens the only other quarterback on the active roster.
