Hawks Injury Update: Adreian Payne will not play Friday

By on 11/07/2014 02:00:00 PM

Atlanta Hawks rookie Adreian Payne has been ruled out of the team's Friday contest in Charlotte. Payne, selected 15th overall in this past summer's draft out of Michigan State, has been battling plantar fasciitis. The injury was announced on October 31st, and Payne has yet to step on the court since.

Even when healthy, it will be a struggle for Payne to get minutes in a crowded Atlanta frontcourt. There were high expectations for Payne after the 6'10" power forward posted averages of 16.4 points per game and 7.3 rebounds per game in his senior year in East Lansing. Payne impressed during the NBA summer league by scoring 75 points in six games, however disappointed in five preseason games for the Hawks. It has since been reported that Payne may be demoted to the D-League to further improve his skills until a role develops for him in Atlanta.

Frontcourt stalwarts Paul Millsap and Al Horford are locked in place at the starting power forward and center positions, and they don't appear to be leaving any time soon. In order to make it in the NBA, it appears Payne will have to be content as a role player in the Peach State or look elsewhere around the league.
