Maple Leafs Injury Update: Jake Gardiner leaves game with lower-body injury, did not return

The Toronto Maple Leafs will be short a defenseman for an undetermined amount of time as veteran Jake Gardiner left Thursday night's game against the Avalanche after suffering a lower-body injury. According to Sportsnet, Gardiner suffered the injury while blocking a shot in the first period of last night's 4-3 shootout loss at Colorado and did not return.

The Maple Leafs had a tough night last night. Not only did they lose in a shootout to a struggling Avalanche team (4-6-5, 13 points), but the team lost Gardiner to a lower-body injury and forward Daniel Winnik  to a head-injury after he was knocked unconscious in the first period.

Gardiner is in his fourth season with the Maple Leafs after spending three seasons with the Toronto Marlies of the AHL. Gardiner has contributed nicely in his short career tallying 30+ point seasons twice (2011-12, 2013-14) since being a full-time member of the Leafs.
