Marlins Injury Update: Enrique Hernandez suffers abdominal strain in winter ball

By on 11/14/2014 04:00:00 PM

Miami Marlins utility man Enrique Hernandez is expected to miss the remainder of the Winter League season due to a lower-abdominal strain, reports Joe Frisaro of

Hernandez felt discomfort during a workout Tuesday in Puerto Rico. He's been advised to rest the injury and will be evaluated next week in Miami, when the team will have a better idea of the timetable for his return.

Miami acquired Hernandez from the Houston Astros at the trade deadline along with starting pitcher Jarred Cosart in exchange for three prospects and a 2015 compensatory draft pick. Hernandez showed some promised in his first season in the majors, posting a 110 wRC+ and 1.1 WAR in 42 games between the two teams.

If the injury does not hold him back by the time spring training comes around, Hernandez will battle for the second base job with Donovan Solano and Derek Dietrich. Hernandez could also fill the role of fourth outfielder for Miami in 2015.
