Marlins Injury Update: Jose Fernandez expected back in June or July

By on 11/03/2014 06:00:00 AM

It can be argued that when fully healthy the Miami Marlins have the best hitter and the best pitcher in all of the major leagues.  After being hit in the face in September, outfielder Giancarlo Stanton is expected to be ready to go then the season begins.  Jim Bowden reported that pitching phenom, Jose Fernadez is not expected back as quickly.  He tweeted earlier that his return from Tommy John surgery is not expected until mid-season.
While he has begun throwing, this timetable seems very reasonable, considering that Fernadez underwent surgery in early May.

Through his one plus seasons in the major leagues, he has been one of the top pitchers in the game.  After a Rookie of the Year season in 2013 where Fernandez went 12-4 with a 2.19 ERA, he was just as good in 2014.  Through his first eight games he went 4-2 with a 2.44 ERA and a strike out rate of over 12 batters for every nine innings pitched.

Getting him back at full strength at some point would be a major upgrade for a Miami roster that is looking to get back to the top of the National League East.
