Panthers Injury Report: Cam Newton, Star Lotulelei

By on 11/12/2014 04:15:00 PM

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera insisted that quarterback Cam Newton is not injured despite looking hobbled Monday night, reports Dan Hanzus of Rivera also added that defensive tackle Star Lotulelei is unlikely to play Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, but could return after the bye:

Newton was sacked nine times during Monday night's 45-21 trouncing at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles and didn't look particularly mobile for much of the game. Mike Garafalo of Fox Sports claimed that Newton is dealing with a right foot injury, but Rivera denied the report.

Rivera said Newton is “about as healthy as he's going to be” 10 games into the season without a bye week.

After leading his team to a 12-4 record last season, Newton has not played at the same level and Carolina has struggled as a whole, leading many to believe he may be dealing with an injury. Newton has posted career lows in quarterback rating and yards per rush so far in 2014 while playing behind an ineffective offensive line and few receiving weapons.

Lotulelei was carted off the field Monday night with an apparent ankle injury, but an MRI revealed it was only a sprain. With one game remaining before a bye week, the Panthers may choose to play it safe and hold Lotulelei out against Atlanta.

The 2013 first-round pick made waves as a rookie but has only accounted for nine tackles this year and has yet to record a sack. Carolina's defense ranks 29th in the NFL in points allowed per game after being one of the best in football last season and can't afford to have any players out for a significant amount of time.
