Panthers Injury Update: Star Lotulelei carted off field

By on 11/11/2014 04:00:00 PM

Star second-year defensive tackle, Star Lotulelei, was injured in Carolina’s 45-21 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. With just over two minutes left in the third quarter of Monday night’s game, Lotulelei had to be carted off the field with an apparent ankle injury.

While rushing Eagles quarterback Mark Sanchez, Lotulelei rolled his ankle after stepping on a teammate. Before being carted off, he spent several minutes on the ground, visibly in pain. Naturally, the Panthers assumed the worst.

On Tuesday, however, X-rays were done on the ankle, and they did not show any significant damage. According to head coach Ron Rivera, there is no break and Lotulelei will undergo further tests once the team arrives in Charlotte, to gauge his availability going forward.

After a strong rookie season which included 31 tackles and three sacks, Lotulelei has been having a down year. The former 14th overall pick remains a central part of the Carolina pass rush, and if he is to miss time, his presence will be sorely missed.

The Panthers, who have a record of 3-6-1, will enter week 11 looking to end a five game skid that has included four losses and a tie. Fortunately for the team, the entire NFC South has had a very poor season. The Panthers remain only one game out of first, and they will face the first place New Orleans Saints on December 7th, which will likely be the deciding game for the division lead.
