Reds Injury Update: Joey Votto "doing great" in offseason rehab

By on 11/17/2014 11:30:00 AM

The Cincinnati Reds struggled to a 76-86 record this past season in large part to an offense that was 28th in the Major Leagues in runs scored. Looking ahead, the Reds may look to free agency or trades to improve the offense in 2015, but a big factor could be the health of first baseman Joey Votto. The good news is that he appears to be doing great in his rehab this off season as he recovers from a quad injury.

I reported on September 22 that Votto was working out daily and trying to return from a quad injury, but it was unlikely he'd return before the end of the season.

An update on Votto, as reported by Mark Sheldon of, is that he appears to be making strides in his recovery from a quad injury which limited him to 62 games this past season. The Reds received good reports on Votto, who appears to be doing great, according to general manager Walt Jocketty.

A healthy Votto, who still has nine years remaining on a 2012 contract extension, would be excellent news for the Reds heading into the 2015 season.

Votto, an eight-year Major League veteran, hit .255 with six home runs and 23 RBI this season. The four-time All Star, league MVP and Gold Glove Award winner has a career average of .310 with 163 home runs and 553 RBI.
