Saints Injury Update: Brandin Cooks placed on IR

By on 11/19/2014 09:16:00 PM

An already struggling New Orleans Saints team will have to overcome a season ending injury to Brandin Cooks if they hope to salvage their season and earn a playoff birth.

As reported by Gregg Rosenthal of, the Saints decided to put their rookie wide receiver on injured reserve Tuesday, ending his season.  The injury is a significant loss for a Saints offense that's leaned on Cooks' speed and flexibility this year.  Despite averaging 26.1 points per game, the Saints offense has struggled this year without former running back Darren Sproles, traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in the offseason.  Cooks had been the primary replacement for the dynamic running back, so losing him at such a critical point in the season will be a significant hurdle for the Saints to overcome.

The first round speedster out of Oregon State, Cooks is second on the Saints in receptions, with 53.  His 550 yards and three receiving TDs are also second on the team.  With Cooks out, the Saints will likely look to make Kenny Stills a more consistent part of the offense.  Former first round pick Robert Meachem and fourth year undrafted free agent Joe Morgan are also likely to see an increase in snaps.
