Texans Injury Update: Ryan Mallett's season could be over

By on 11/24/2014 10:30:00 AM

The Houston Texans made the decision to bench quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick in favor of the young Ryan Mallett, whom the Texans obtained via a trade from the New England Patriots just prior to the start of the season. Mallett was named the starter prior to Week 11, but it looks like Fitzpatrick will have to lace of his spikes and take the reins once again as Ryan Mallett may be done for the season.

NFL Insider Ian Rapoport, according to, was told by a source that Ryan Mallett may have torn his right pectoral muscle during pregame warmups prior to the contest with the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. Mallet was on the Week 12 injury report with a chest injury and although he did play, he struggled, going 21-45 for 189 yards and a pick.

Mallett is scheduled for an MRI on Monday and the team should have a better idea of the extent of the injury shortly. It's a tough break for Mallett, who becomes a free agent after the season. It appears as though the Texans are prepared to go forward with Ryan Fitzpatrick as their quarterback as they continue to make a drive for the playoffs in the very competitive AFC.
