Angels Injury Update: Garrett Richards out until May

By on 12/12/2014 06:00:00 AM

The Los Angeles Angels lead the league in runs scored this past season en route to a 98-win season, best in the Major Leagues. One area the team may look to improve this winter is the pitching staff which was 16th in the league in ERA. On the injury front, right-handed starter Garrett Richards will be out until May as he continues to recover from a torn patellar tendon.

Our own Pete Schwichtenberg reported on November 4 that Richards, who made 26 starts in 2014 before a bad knee injury, was making progress in his recovery and looked to be on track to return by Spring Training.

Bill Shaikin, who covers the Angels for the Los Angeles Times, tweeted the following on Richards.
Aaron Gleeman of added that Richards tore his patellar tendon in his left knee while covering first base during a game in August, which ended his season.

Richards, a four-year Major League veteran, posted a record of 13-4 with a 2.61 ERA. In 168 2/3 innings, he allowed only 124 hits and 51 walks, while striking out 164. In 110 career games, Richards has a record of 24-17 with a 3.66 ERA.
