Braves Injury Update: Nick Markakis likely to have surgery on bulging disc

By on 12/06/2014 06:00:00 AM

The Atlanta Braves are coming off a 79-win season and finished a distant 17 games behind the Washington Nationals in the National League East. The pitching staff appears to be solid for next season, but the Braves need to improve on an offense that was 29th in runs scored. One move that may help the Braves is the signing of outfielder Nick Markakis, pictured below with the Orioles. The bad news is that Markakis could have surgery on a bulging disc and miss up to three months.

Markakis, who played nine seasons with the Orioles, was bought out by the Orioles after the team declined their half of the $17.5 million mutual option for the 2015 season. Yesterday the Braves agreed to a four-year contract with Markakis worth in the neighborhood of $45 million.

Ken Rosenthal, MLB on FOX reporter, tweeted the following on Markakis.
Markakis was signed to fill the void for the departure of Jason Heyward, who was traded along with Jordan Walden for to the St. Louis Cardinals for Shelby Miller and a minor-leaguer.

Markakis hit .276 with 14 home runs and 50 RBI in 155 games this past season. In 1,365 career games, all with the Orioles, Markakis has a batting average of .290 with 141 home runs and 658 RBI.
