Cardinals Injury Update: Tyrann Mathieu to undergo surgery

By on 12/03/2014 04:08:00 PM

Arizona Cardinals safety Tyrann Mathieu underwent surgery on a fractured and dislocated thumb and could be out up to three weeks. The Cardinals are hopeful he can return for the Week 16 game against the Seattle Seahawks, and Mathieu seems to echo that sentiment.

Mathieu injured his thumb in the game last Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons. According to story by ESPN, the best case scenario would have been for him to return this Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs, while wearing a cast on his thumb. That isn't likely as it was reported Tuesday that he would be having surgery and getting a pin put in.

However, Mathieu has said he would like to set the Week 16 game has a target date for his return, likely very aware that the game has serious playoff implications for his team. The injury report sets Mathieu's return date as the final game against San Francisco, but if the Cardinals lose the previous game, they could also be losing the NFC West.

Fortunately, the amount of time between Mathieu's surgery and the game against the Seahawks is roughly three weeks. That also means he would have to get used to playing with a cast the week before the game.
