Cardinals Injury Updates: Andre Ellington, Tyrann Mathieu

By on 12/02/2014 08:50:00 PM

The anemic Arizona Cardinals running game may take a hit after Andre Ellington suffered a hip pointer in the Cardinals 29-18 loss in Atlanta on Sunday.  The Cardinals defense will deal with a significant injury as well, with corner back Tyrann Mathieu scheduled to have surgery on his broken thumb this week.

Cardinals insider Mike Jurecki reported yesterday that Ellington is dealing with a hip injury related to Sunday's game:
Arizona's rushing game has averaged 74.8 yards per game this season.  Only Oakland's paltry 72.5 yards per game is worse, and Oakland's issues have more to do with continuously playing from behind, than an inability to run the ball.  If Ellington is unable to go this week, even more pressure will be placed on quarterback Drew Stanton as he'll have to rely on rookie Marion Grice and second year back Stepfan Taylor.  The two have a combined 36 carries for 112 yards this season, equaling the team average of 3.1 ypc.

Defensively, free safety Mathieu broke his thumb during Sunday's game and will have surgery tomorrow morning according to Cardinals reporter Darren Urban:
Facing one of the least explosive offenses in the league, the Cardinals likely couldn't have picked a better time to be without Mathieu.  However, with a Thursday matchup with the Rams following this Sunday's game, its likely Mathieu will miss that game as well.
