Pirates Injury Update: Gerrit Cole, Pedro Alvarez, Clint Barmes


The Pittsburgh Pirates have stayed relatively healthy throughout 2014, but they have a few key players out at the time as they fight for a division title. Here are the latest updates on Gerrit Cole, Pedro Alvarez, and Clint Barmes via MLB.com's Stephen Pianovich.

Diamondbacks Injury Update: Brad Ziegler unavailable after being hit by line drive


The Arizona Diamondbacks enter a weekend series against the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday coming off an 11-5 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday. The loss dropped the Diamondbacks to 44-58, fourth in the National League West. A big problem this season has been a pitching staff that is 26th in the Major Leagues in ERA. A bright spot on the staff has been reliever Brad Ziegler, but the Diamondbacks were without Ziegler on Wednesday after being hit in the ribs with a line drive in Tuesday's game.

Athletics Injury Updates: Yoenis Cespedes, Brandon Moss, Alberto Callaspo


The Oakland Athletics won Wednesday nights game 9-7 against the Houston Astros thanks to Yoenis Cespedes, who hit two home runs, however; he left the game due to a sprained right thumb when he had an awkward fall at the plate in the fifth inning. Brandon Moss spun while tagging speedy Jose Altuve in the eighth and he seemed to be in pain but he did not come out reported by Susan Slusser from The Drumbeat. Infielder Alberto Callaspo could come back on Sunday according to Carl Steward.

Phillies Injury Update: Carlos Ruiz activated


The Philadelphia Phillies fell to the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday by the score of 3-0. The loss was the third straight for the Phillies against the Giants and dropped to 43-57, twelve and a half games out in the National League East. A bit of good news was the return of catcher Carlos Ruiz, who returned from a concussion and went 2-for-4 with a double.

Astros Injury Update: George Springer placed on DL


The Houston Astros announced Tuesday evening that they have placed rookie outfielder George Springer on the 15-day disabled list with a left quad strain. The move is retroactive to July 20. They have called up infielder Marc Krauss from Triple-A Oklahoma City to take Springer's roster spot.

Nationals Injury Update: Ryan Zimmerman on DL with strained hamstring


The Washington Nationals have announced that they have placed third baseman Ryan Zimmerman on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring suffered in Tuesday night's win over the Colorado Rockies. They have recalled infielder Zach Walters from Triple-A Syracuse to take Zimmerman's spot on the roster.

Yankees Injury Update: Kelly Johnson placed on DL


The New York Yankees announced Wednesday afternoon that they have placed utility man Kelly Johnson on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left groin suffered in Tuesday night's win over the Texas Rangers. The have called up right-handed pitcher Chris Leroux from Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes Barre to fill in Johnson's roster spot.

Mets Injury Update: Scott Rice, Ruben Tejada


The New York Mets are having another poor season. They are 47-53 and are sitting in fourth place in the National League East. Mets lefty Scott Rice will undergo season ending elbow surgery and shortstop Ruben Tejada's left hand is still swollen, however, he does not need X-Rays on it.

Royals Injury Update: Eric Hosmer, Danny Valencia


The Kansas City Royals moved to within a game of .500 with a 7-1 win over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday. At 49-50, the Royals are in third place in the American League Central, seven games behind the Detroit Tigers. Mike Moustakas went 3-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI for the Royals, who played without Eric Hosmer for the second straight game with a hand injury. Moustakas started at third in place of Danny Valencia, who was hit by a pitch on Monday.

Diamondbacks Injury Update: Cody Ross to DL


The Arizona Diamondbacks right fielder Cody Ross is back on the 15-day disabled list once again, this time because of a left calf strain.

Tigers Injury Update: Joel Hanrahan, Andy Dirks


The Detroit Tigers bullpen woes have continued this season as they lost 5-4 Tuesday night with the bullpen blowing the game. Reliever Joel Hanrahan has been recovering from the dreaded Tommy John surgery and Tigers fans could not wait for him to help the bullpen. However, Joel Hanrahan has been shut down after his bullpen session. There is good news with Tigers outfielder Andy Dirks. Dirks has resumed baseball activities as reported by James Schmehl from MLive.com.

Orioles Injury Update: Manny Machado sits with back issue


The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Los Angeles Angels for the second straight game with a 4-2 decision last night. The win improved the Orioles to 55-44, first in the American League East. Miguel Gonzalez allowed just two earned runs on three hits in 7 2/3 innings to pick up the win. Jonathan Schoop and J.J. Hardy each had two hits for the Orioles, who were without Manny Machado due to a back injury. 

Brewers Injury Update: Scooter Gennett exits with tight quad


The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday by the score of 4-3. Jonathan Lucroy went 2-for-4 with two home runs, one a walk-off home run off of Sam LeCure. The win, which was the second straight for the Brewers over the Reds, improved the Brewers to 56-45 on the season. There is a bit of concern on the injury front, as second baseman Scooter Gennett had to leave the game with tightness in his right quad. 

Twins Injury Update: Kyle Gibson, Byron Buxton, Ricky Nolasco


Minnesota Twins right-hander Kyle Gibson will not make his start Wednesday because of back stiffness, reports Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com. Bollinger tweeted Gibson's scratch and the news that Anthony Swarzak will take the mound in his place:

Reds Injury Update: Zack Cozart, Logan Ondrusek


Cincinnati Reds shortstop Zack Cozart was forced out of Tuesday night's loss to the Milwaukee Brewers after being hit by a Jimmy Nelson pitch on the right hand. John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that X-rays were negative but Cozart is unlikely to play Wednesday. Fay also reports that right-handed reliever Logan Ondrusek has been placed on the DL with a strained right shoulder. Cozart told Fay that his hand was just 'a little sore':

Athletics Injury Update: Josh Reddick activated


The Oakland A's entered Tuesday night's game against the Houston Astros with a record of 61-37, first in the American League East. The A's have been a powerhouse both offensively and on the mound all season, ranked second in runs scored and third in ERA. The offense should get even better, with the return of veteran outfielder Josh Reddick, who has been out with an injured right knee.

Pirates Injury Update: Starling Marte to 7-day concussion DL


The Pirates placed Starling Marte on the seven-day concussion disabled list Wednesday after taking a 93 mph fastball to the helmet 5 days earlier, according to Stephen Pianovich of MLB.com. Brent Morel was promoted form Triple-A Indianapolis to take Marte’s roster spot.

Padres Injury Report: Everth Cabrera rehab result


The San Diego Padres got shut out by the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday by the score of 6-0. The loss dropped the Padres to 43-56 on the season, third in the National League West. Although fourth in the Major Leagues in ERA, the Padres are a dismal 30th in runs scored. On the injury front, Everth Cabrera had a successful first rehab game on Tuesday.

Astros Injury Update: Collin McHugh rehab result


The Houston Astros entered Tuesday night's game against the Oakland A's with a record of 41-58, fourth in the American League West. Although 25th in the league in runs scored and 28th in ERA, the Astros have improved over a season ago, in which they won only 51 games. There was some good news on the injury front, as pitcher Collin McHugh pitched well in a rehab start at Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Rangers Injury Update: Alex Rios expected to return by Thursday


The Texas Rangers lost to the New York Yankees on Tuesday by the score of 2-1, in 14 innings. The loss dropped the Rangers to 40-60, last in the American League West. The Rangers, who are 29th in the league in ERA, allowed only two runs, but the offense left eight men on base. On the injury front, Alex Rios is expected to return Thursday from a right ankle injury he suffered on Saturday.
