Although it looked much worse than it was, the Los Angeles Dodgers are reporting that Scott Van Slyke left tonight's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks with a mild-ankle sprain and should be back soon.
As the Cincinnati Reds' slim playoff hopes seem to dwindle by the day, first baseman Joey Vottoappears to have resumed baseball activities as he was seen with both his bat and glove. Though no timetable has yet been set, Votto's presence in the lineup would be a great sight for Reds fans.
The Arizona Diamondbacks have struggled all season and sit nineteen and a half games out in the National League West with a record of 55-77. Injuries have not helped the cause, as nine players are currently on the DL, with four on the 60-day DL. One major injury was that to first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, who fractured his left hand on August 1. The good news is that he will not need surgery.
The Pittsburgh Pirates improved to 68-64 on the season following a 5-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals last night. With the win the Pirates are five games out in the division and a game and a half back in the wild card race. There is a bit of concern moving forward, as Pedro Alvarez left the game with a foot sprain after going 0-for-3 with a strikeout.
The Seattle Mariners defeated the Texas Rangers on Tuesday by the score of 5-0. The win improved the Mariners to 72-59, third in the American League West. Endy Chavez had two RBI for the Mariners, while Robinson Cano added his 12th home run of the season. Chavez made the most of his start in place of Chris Denorfia, who was out with a stiff neck.
The Colorado Rockies continue to struggle with injuries and
it appears that two more players could join the growing list of teammates on the
disabled list. Pitcher Jorge De La Rosa
left Tuesday’s start in the sixth with a thumb injury. Catcher Wilin Rosario’s left wrist is not
healing as expected.
The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday by the score of 5-2 . The win improved the Pirates to 68-64, third in the National League Central. Ike Davis broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning with a three-run home run. Tony Watson got the win in relief to improve to 9-1 on the season. On the injury front, pitcher Charlie Morton, who has been battling a hip injury and sports hernia, will start a rehab assignment on Thursday.
The Atlanta Braves are in good position in the National League wild card race with a little more than a month remaining, but they are in danger of falling out of the race in the National League East. One aspect of the team keeping them afloat is a pitching staff which is fifth in the league in ERA. There is some bad news on the injury front, as Jonny Venters, who has been battling his way back from elbow surgery, has again been shut down.
The Atlanta Braves entered a series against the New York Mets on Tuesday seven and half games behind the Washington Nationals in the National League East. At 26th in the Major Leagues in runs scored, the Braves have relied on a pitching staff that is 5th in ERA. There is some news regarding injured starting pitcher Gavin Floyd, who will need at least another six weeks before he's able to throw. He should be ready for spring training next year.
Pirates centerfielder Andrew McCutchen, the reigning NL MVP, was removed from Tuesday's 5-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the sixth inning due to left rib discomfort (video here and below). The outfielder exited two innings after making a spectacular catch, according to Tom Singer of MLB.com. McCutchen was replaced by Starling Marte in center with Jose Tabata comng in to play right field.
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez had a major setback in his recovery from a strained right pectoral muscle. Michigan Live.com's James Schmehl reports that Sanchez's Tuesday ultrasound revealed that the right-hander has torn the muscle and could miss the remainder of the season although that is not yet definite.
The Detroit Tigers enters a series against the New York Yankees tonight coming off a 13-4 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Sunday. Even with the loss, the Tigers are 70-59 and only a game and a half behind the Kansas City Royals in the American League Central. The Tigers played without Miguel Cabrera due to a ankle injury. The good news is that Cabrera should be ready to play in tonight's game.
The Washington Nationals enter Tuesday night's game against the Philadelphia Phillies coming off a 3-2 loss last night. Even with the loss, the Nationals are 75-55, seven and a half games ahead of the Atlanta Braves in the National League East. Wilson Ramos and Anthony Rendon accounted for the Nationals' runs with solo home runs. The Nationals will try to take game two of the series tonight without the services of first baseman Adam LaRoche, who is out with a sore back.
Manager Bud Black of the San Diego Padres said it's likely Carlos Quentin's season is over due to a bone bruise on his knee reports Jeff Sunders of the San Diego Union-Tribune. Second basemanJedd Gyorko and shortstop Everth Cabrera are both out with hamstring injuries, but Gyorko's return is "close" while Cabrera's is at least a few days away.
St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Matt Adams was not seriously injured when he ran into a railing after a foul ball in Monday's 3-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. However, outfielder Shane Robinson sustained a left shoulder injury (video here and below) that will almost certainly lead to a roster move, reports Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com.
