Giants Injury Update: Marco Scutaro, Ehire Adrianza, Angel Pagan, Brandon Belt


The San Francisco Giants are awaiting the returns of four key players from the disabled list. Two of them are starting to show progress after some time already on while the others joined the disabled list on July 25. Here are the latest updates on Marco Scutaro, Ehire Adrianza, Angel Pagan, and Brandon Belt via Giants beat writers Carl Steward and Ryan Hood.

Athletics Injury Update: Yoenis Cespedes, Kyle Blanks, Stephen Vogt


Oakland Athletics slugging outfielder Yoenis Cespedes is recovering from injury and made his return on Friday. Key role players Kyle Blanks and Stephen Vogt are also recovering from injuries as reported by Jane Lee from MLB.com.

Braves Injury Update: Gavin Floyd healing well


Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Gavin Floyd passed the first post-surgery test from a fractured right elbow. He is showing progress and will still be on a four-week checkup.

Pirates Injury Update: Gerrit Cole will start rehab Monday


Gerrit Cole make a return to the Pittsburg Pirates rotation in early August. Cole will make a 80 pitch rehab start for Triple-A Indianapolis in Rochester, New York as reported by Travis Sawchik from Triblive.com.

Cole who is dealing with a right lat strain threw a 55 pitch bullpen session with ease on Friday and Clint Hurdle believes he is ready to make the 80 pitch rehab start for Indianapolis. Cole did not make a rehab start after he returned from shoulder fatigue in June. Cole made two Major League starts before leaving his second start with back issues.

The Pirates have been careful with their young superstar. They do not want him to return and then have to hit the disabled list for a third time. He will be a difference make as the Pirates make a playoff push.

Rangers Injury Update: Jake Smolinski placed on DL


Texas Rangers outfielder Jake Smolinski was moved to the 15-day disabled list retroactive to July 22. This made room for righty Jerome Williams who started Friday against the Oakland Athletics.

Mets Injury Update: Daisuke Matsuzaka to have elbow examined


The New York Mets scored three runs in the ninth inning on Friday night to defeat the Milwaukee Brewers by the score of 3-2. Lucas Duda hit a two-run home run and David Wright had an RBI single in the ninth. The win improved the Mets to 49-54 on the season, fourth place in the National League East. The Mets are struggling offensively, but are hanging tough with a pitching staff ranked 10th in the Major Leagues in ERA. There is some concern with reliever Daisuke Matsuzaka, who is dealing with an elbow issue.

Nationals Injury Update: Matt Purke transferred to 60-day DL



The Washington Nationals transferred left-handed pitcher Matt Purke to the 60-day DL, activated outfielder Eury Perez from the DL and optioned him to Triple-A Syracuse. Purke underwent Tommy John surgery May 29, and is out for the season. Perez fractured his toe in April.

Angels Injury Update: Josh Hamilton exits with knee soreness


Los Angeles Angels left fielder Josh Hamilton made an early exit on Friday, coming out of the team's 2-1 win over the Detroit Tigers in the fourth inning. Matthew DeFranks of MLB.com reports that Hamilton was removed as a result of a sore left knee.

Giants Injury Update: Hector Sanchez exits


Hector Sanchez of the Giants left Friday’s against the Dodgers after taking a foul tip to the mask, the team announced. He was removed from the game the next inning after he flied out. Buster Posey moved to catcher, Michael Morse from left field to first, and Tyler Colvin to left field off the bench.

Twins Injury Update: Kyle Gibson, Byron Buxton


Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Kyle Gibson is hoping to return to team’s rotation soon, reports Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Berardino adds that outfield prospect Byron Buxton returned to action Thursday night with High-A Fort Myers after missing five games with a sore wrist:

Astros Injury Update: Dexter Fowler, Matt Albers, Jesse Crain


The Houston Astros don’t expect to get center fielder Dexter Fowler, relief pitcher Matt Albers or relief pitcher Jesse Crain back off the disabled list anytime soon, reports Brian McTaggart of MLB.com:

Rangers Injury Update: Mitch Moreland, Joseph Ortiz


Texas Rangers designated hitter Mitch Moreland was officially sent to the 60-day disabled list on Thursday. He is out for the season because of ankle reconstruction surgery in June. Also, the Rangers sent left handed pitcher Joseph Ortiz to Double-A Frisco to continue his rehab assignment.

Royals Injury Update: Jason Vargas, Eric Hosmer


Kansas City Royals pitcher Jason Vargas continues to make progress in his recovery from an appendectomy that landed the pitcher on the disabled list. Also, Eric Hosmer, who is dealing with a bruised hand, has been kept out of the Royals lineup.

Giants Injury Update: Brandon Belt, Joe Panik


The San Francisco Giants are leading the National League West and are looking to gain ground on the Los Angeles Dodgers who are 1.5 games back. Brandon Belt, one of the Giants' main pieces, was hit in the head with a pitch on Saturday and is on the disabled list with a concussion. He let his manager know that the concussion like symptomshave worsened. Joe Panik, who sprained his right ankle, claimed it did not seem as bad, and it did not swell according to Henry Schulman from the San Francisco Chronicle.

Nationals Injury Update: Jayson Werth dealing with sore knee


The Washington Nationals enter a weekend series against the Cincinnati Reds coming off a 6-4 loss to the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday. Denard Span went 4-for-5 with two runs scored in the loss, which dropped the Nationals to 55-44, a game and a half ahead of the Atlanta Braves in the National League East. There is a bit of concern on the injury front, as right fielder Jayson Werth has been dealing with a sore knee.

Mets Injury Update: Ruben Tejada expected to return today


The New York Mets lost in blowout fashion yesterday against the Milwaukee Brewers by the score of 9-1. The Mets scored their only run on a home run by Lucas Duda in the seventh inning. Matt Garza allowed only two hits in eight innings to get the win for the Brewers. The loss dropped the Mets to 48-54 on the season, fourth in the National League East. Wilmer Flores started at shortstop for the Mets in place of Ruben Tejada, who sat for the second straight game after being hit in the head by a pitch. The good news is that Tejada should be ready for today's game. 

Orioles Injury Update: Ubaldo Jimenez, Manny Machado


The Baltimore Orioles right handed pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez is pleased with his Wednesday bullpen session in which he threw 35 pitches and performed running drills to test his right ankle, according to Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com.  Jimenez twisted his ankle in a parking lot the day before the All-Star Break; Orioles manager Buck Showalter was quoted by Ghiroli as saying that Jimenez return “is not imminent”.  Third baseman Manny Machado was a late scratch Tuesday night after experiencing back spasms during batting practice.  He sat out of Wednesday’s game despite feeling better.  

Cubs Injury Update: Edwin Jackson, Justin Ruggiano (UPDATED)


Cubs right-hander Edwin Jackson left Thursday night's 13-3 loss to the San Diego Padres with cramping in his pitching hand, reports Carrie Muskat of MLB.com. Jackson, who allowed seven hits and five runs (four earned) in five innings, has experienced the condition previously but has not missed a start. Rumor has it that the last-place Cubs are looking to trade Jackson and his 5.68 ERA. Outfielder Justin Ruggiano is dealing with a tight groin that has kept him out since Tuesday. Manager Rick Renteria siad he was feeling better on Thursday.
UPDATE: 7/25/2014 1:00 p.m. Ruggiano is not in Friday's starting lineup against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Giants Injury Update: Ehire Adrianza headed for DL


Ehire Adrianza of the Giants will head to the disabled list with an injured hamstring, according to Alex Pavlovic of The San Jose Mercury News. There has been no word on who will get called up, but Dan Uggla was just signed to a minor-league deal early in the week, so he is a good candidate to get called up.

Brewers Injury Update: Scooter Gennett still out with tight quad


The Milwaukee Brewers improved to 58-45 on the season following a 9-1 thumping of the New York Mets on Thursday. Matt Garza allowed only a run on two hits in eight innings to get the win. The Brewers got home runs from Ryan Braun, Jonathan Lucroy and Khris Davis to spark a 10-hit attack. Rickie Weeks added a hit and a run scored playing for the injured Scooter Gennett, who is still out with a quad injury.
