Diamondbacks Injury Update: Cliff Pennington rehab result


The Arizona Diamondbacks lost to the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday by the score of 4-2. The loss dropped the Diamondbacks to 45-60, fourth in the National League West. The Diamondbacks have been plagued with injuries this season, as 11 players are currently on the disabled list. There is good news regarding Cliff Pennington, who began a rehab assignment, playing in his first game in nearly two months.

Rays Injury Update: Joel Peralta rehab result


The Tampa Bay Rays fell to the Boston Red Sox on Sunday by the score of 3-2. The loss dropped the Rays to 51-54 on the season, fourth in the American League East. The Rays scored both of their runs on a two-run double by Desmond Jennings. On the injury front, there is good news regarding Joel Peralta, who threw a bullpen session on Friday and began a rehab assignment on Saturday.

Rockies Injury Update: Jordan Lyles rehab result


The Colorado Rockies entered Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates with a record of 43-60, last in the National League West, despite being third in the Major Leagues in runs scored. The problem with the Rockies has been a dreadful pitching staff that is 30th in ERA at 4.96. There could be some help on the way in the next couple of weeks, as Jordan Lyles made his first rehab start on Saturday.

Padres Injury Update: Ian Kennedy to miss start with oblique strain


The San Diego Padres have scratched starting pitcher Ian Kennedy from Monday's game against the Atlanta Braves because of a strained left oblique. The Padres, however, expect him to miss only this one start. Lefty Jason Lane will come up from Triple-A El Paso to pitch Monday in the series finale against the Braves.

Athletics Injury Update: Coco Crisp out, will have sore neck examined


Oakland Athletics center fielder Coco Crisp has left his team in Texas to travel back to Oakland to have his sore neck examined. He sat out Sunday for the second time in the last three games. MLB.com's Athletics beat writer Jane Lee reported the news after the Athletics' 5-2 victory over the Rangers on Sunday.

Angels Injury Update: C.J. Wilson, Josh Hamilton


Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim pitcher C.J. Wilson will make a rehab start with Double-A Arkansas on Monday, reports Matthew DeFranks of MLB.com. Outfielder Josh Hamilton is also back in the lineup and starting in left field on Sunday after missing Saturday’s game with a sore left knee:

Indians Injury Update: Lonnie Chisenhall, Asdrubal Cabrera


Cleveland Indians third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall is out of the lineup for Sunday's finale against the Kansas City Royals after missing Saturday's game with an unspecified illness, according to the team's Twitter account. He was replaced by Mike Aviles. Shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera is back in the lineup after missing five games with back spasms, according to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com Cleveland has lost four straight and is 3.5 games back in the AL Wild Card race.  

Rockies Injury Update: Troy Tulowitzki, Drew Stubbs, Justin Morneau


Colorado Rockies star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki flew to Philadelphia Saturday to meet with Dr. William Meyers to discuss the next steps in healing and recovery from the hip flexor tendon strain suffered on July 19. In addition, outfielder Drew Stubbs is day-to-day after twisting his ankle while hitting a home run, and first baseman Justin Morneau took batting practice Saturday for the first time since hitting the disabled list on July 14.

Rangers Injury Update: Nick Tepesch, Derek Holland


In the seventh innning of Saturday's 5-1 loss to the Oakland Athletics, right hander Nick Tepesch was removed with left knee inflammation, according to Gerry Fraley of the Dallas Morning News. Tepesch, who is 3-7 with a 4.84 ERA (ERA+ 85) will be evaluated Sunday. Anthony Andro of Fox Sports Southwest reports that LHP Derek Holland will make his 2014 debut Wednesday for Double-A Frisco to begin his rehab from microfracture surgery on his left knee. Holland is expected to return in late August or September.

Astros Injury Update: Josh Zeid placed on DL


The Houston Astros fell to the Miami Marlins on Saturday by the score of 7-3, dropping the Astros to 42-62 on the season. Although 22 1/2 games back in the American League West, the Astros have improved somewhat over their 51-win season a year ago. The pitching staff has struggled, though, to an ERA of 4.46. Injuries have not helped and now a fourth reliever is on the disabled list, with the addition of Josh Zeid, who is out with a foot injury.

Pirates Injury Update: Pedro Alvarez still out with sore knee


The Pittsburgh Pirates fell to 54-49 on the season following an 8-1 loss to the Colorado Rockies on Saturday. The Pirates managed just four hits and scored their only run on a pinch-hit home run by Ike Davis in the ninth inning. The Pirates were without a big bat in the middle of the order, as third baseman Pedro Alvarez sat again with a sore knee.

Athletics Injury Update: Alberto Callaspo rehab result


The Oakland A's continue to hold off the Los Angeles Angels in the American League West. Following a 5-1 victory on Saturday against the Texas Rangers, the A's improved to 64-39 on the season. Leading the league in runs scored and third in pitching, the A's are running on all cylinders. But there is an extra piece of the puzzle who could return as soon as today, as Alberto Callaspo played a rehab game last night

Giants Injury Update: Hector Sanchez to concussion DL, Andrew Susac called up


After exiting Friday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers because  a foul tip hit him on the mask, Giants backup catcher Hector Sanchez was placed on the 7-day concusion list on Saturday, according to D.J. Short of Hardball Talk, and prospect Andrew Susac was called up from Triple-A Fresno.

Diamondbacks Injury Update: Aaron Hill exits after HBP


Diamondbacks second baseman Aaron Hill was hit in the right hand by a  Justin De Fratus pitch in the sixth inning of Saturday night's 10-6 win over the Phillies, according to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com (video here and below). X-rays were negative, and Hill will be re-evaluated Sunday morning. He was replaced by Didi Gregorius.

Giants Injury Update: Pablo Sandoval leaves with back, leg tightness


San Francisco Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval left Saturday night's 5-0 loss to the LA Dodgers after popping out in the seventh inning with back and leg tightness, according to Alex Pavlovic of the Bay Area News Group. He was replaced by Tony Abreu. Manager Bruce Bochy described Sandoval as "pretty beat up" but hopes the switch hitter can play in Sunday's finale. The loss dropped the Giants to ½ game behind the Dodgers in the NL West race.

Athletics Injury Update: John Jaso pulled with knee irritation


After crushing a two-run homer in the sixth inning of the Oakland A's 5-1 victory over the Texas Rangers, catcher John Jaso left in the eighth inning with a "twinge" in his left knee, according to John Hickey of the Bay Area News Group (video here and below). Jaso, who is hitting .285/.362/.459 (OPS+ 131) with seven homers and 33 RBI, could play Sunday. He was replaced by Derek Norris.

Giants Injury Update: Matt Cain is not improving


The San Francisco Giants are battling the Los Angeles Dodgers for top spot in the National League West. The Dodgers have been more balanced, while the Giants have relied more heavily on a pitching staff that is 6th in the Major Leagues in ERA. It appears someone on the staff will have to pick up the slack for Matt Cain, as he has not been improving since being placed on the disabled list with an elbow injury.

Diamondbacks Injury Update: Brad Ziegler good to go


The Arizona Diamondbacks entered Saturday night's game against the Philadelphia Phillies with a 44-59 record, last in the National League West. At 26th in the Major Leagues in team ERA, the Diamonbacks have not had a lot of positives out of the pitching staff this season. One bright spot has been Brad Ziegler, who has been out since Wednesday after being hit by a line drive in Tuesday's game. The good news is that Ziegler was ready to go on Saturday.

Padres Injury Update: Carlos Quentin, Yonder Alonso


Outfielder Carlos Quentin is not in the Padres' lineup for Saturday night's game against the Atlanta Braves after leaving Friday night's game with knee soreness in the fourth inning, according to Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune.  The team activated Yonder Alonso and sent first baseman Jake Goebbert to Triple-A El Paso. Alonso, who slashed .210/.250/.341 (OPS +69) before he missed 30 games with right wrist tendinitis, is playing first base and hitting eighth.

Rockies Injury Update: Carlos Gonzalez scratched


Carlos Gonzalez of the Rockies is out of the lineup Saturday due to an ankle injury. Thomas Harding of MLB.com says he rolled his right ankle earlier in the day.
