Nationals Injury Update: Jayson Werth dealing with sore knee

The Washington Nationals enter a weekend series against the Cincinnati Reds coming off a 6-4 loss to the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday. Denard Span went 4-for-5 with two runs scored in the loss, which dropped the Nationals to 55-44, a game and a half ahead of the Atlanta Braves in the National League East. There is a bit of concern on the injury front, as right fielder Jayson Werth has been dealing with a sore knee.

Mets Injury Update: Ruben Tejada expected to return today

The New York Mets lost in blowout fashion yesterday against the Milwaukee Brewers by the score of 9-1. The Mets scored their only run on a home run by Lucas Duda in the seventh inning. Matt Garza allowed only two hits in eight innings to get the win for the Brewers. The loss dropped the Mets to 48-54 on the season, fourth in the National League East. Wilmer Flores started at shortstop for the Mets in place of Ruben Tejada, who sat for the second straight game after being hit in the head by a pitch. The good news is that Tejada should be ready for today's game. 

Orioles Injury Update: Ubaldo Jimenez, Manny Machado

The Baltimore Orioles right handed pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez is pleased with his Wednesday bullpen session in which he threw 35 pitches and performed running drills to test his right ankle, according to Brittany Ghiroli of  Jimenez twisted his ankle in a parking lot the day before the All-Star Break; Orioles manager Buck Showalter was quoted by Ghiroli as saying that Jimenez return “is not imminent”.  Third baseman Manny Machado was a late scratch Tuesday night after experiencing back spasms during batting practice.  He sat out of Wednesday’s game despite feeling better.  

Cubs Injury Update: Edwin Jackson, Justin Ruggiano

Cubs right-hander Edwin Jackson left Thursday night's 13-3 loss to the San Diego Padres with cramping in his pitching hand, reports Carrie Muskat of Jackson, who allowed seven hits and five runs (four earned) in five innings, has experienced the condition previously but has not missed a start. Rumor has it that the last-place Cubs are looking to trade Jackson and his 5.68 ERA. Outfielder Justin Ruggiano is dealing with a tight groin that has kept him out since Tuesday. Manager Rick Renteria siad he was feeling better on Thursday.

Giants Injury Update: Ehire Adrianza headed for DL

Ehire Adrianza of the Giants will head to the disabled list with an injured hamstring, according to Alex Pavlovic of The San Jose Mercury News. There has been no word on who will get called up, but Dan Uggla was just signed to a minor-league deal early in the week, so he is a good candidate to get called up.

Adrianza was running to second when he pulled up and grabbed the back of his leg. He already spent 4 weeks on the DL due to the same hamstring injury and was just getting back to his normal self by going 4 for 14 in the past 7 days.

This season, Adrianza has a line of .237/.279/.299 with 0 home runs, 5 RBI, 5 walks, 22 strikeouts, and a .578 OPS in 53 games. He has committed 2 errors as a second baseman this year, which is a .974 fielding percentage.

In 2013, Adrianza hit for a slash of .222/.263/.444 with 1 home run, 3 RBI, 1 walk, 5 strikeouts, and a .707 OPS in 9 games. He had a 0.2 WAR while committing one error at shortstop.

The Giants are 57-43 and 1.5 games in front of the Dodgers for first place as they start a 3 game series Friday where Tim Lincecum (9-6, 3.65 ERA) will face Zack Greinke (11-6, 2.90 ERA).

Brewers Injury Update: Scooter Gennett still out with tight quad

The Milwaukee Brewers improved to 58-45 on the season following a 9-1 thumping of the New York Mets on Thursday. Matt Garza allowed only a run on two hits in eight innings to get the win. The Brewers got home runs from Ryan Braun, Jonathan Lucroy and Khris Davis to spark a 10-hit attack. Rickie Weeks added a hit and a run scored playing for the injured Scooter Gennett, who is still out with a quad injury.

Angels Injury Update; Grant Green X-ray is clean

The Los Angeles Angels entered Thursday night's game against the Detroit Tigers leading the Major Leagues in runs scored. Their offensive production is a large reason the Angels are 60-40, only two and a half games behind the Oakland A's in the American League West. On the injury front, backup outfielder Grant Green got some positive news yesterday on his lower back injury which placed him in the disabled list.

Mariners Injury Update: James Paxton, Michael Saunders, Roenis Elias

The Seattle Mariners entered a weekend series against the Baltimore Orioles with a record of 53-48, third in the American League West. The Mariners are in good position heading into the final two months of the season for a wild card spot, lead by a pitching staff that leads the Major Leagues in ERA. One pitcher who could add to the pitching depth is James Paxton, who is making strides in his recovery from injury. There is also good news on Michael Saunders and Roenis Elias.

White Sox Injury Update: Zach Putnam placed on DL

Chicago White Sox reliever Zach Putnam has been placed on the disabled list with right shoulder inflammation. According to Patrick Donnelly of, Andre Rienzo will take Putnam's place on the roster. Donnelly quoted manager Robin Ventura, who suggested that Putnam's injury was minor but the team didn't want to risk him taking the mound at less than full health:

Mariners Injury Update: Willie Bloomquist placed on DL

Seattle Mariners utilityman Willie Bloomquist has landed on the 15-day DL with a bruised right knee. Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune reports that Bloomquist suffered the injury when running to first base during Wednesday's loss to the New York Mets. Manager Lloyd McClendon told Dutton that the team couldn't afford to play short-handed while the veteran recovers:

Twins Injury Update: Phil Hughes exits after comebacker

Twins right-hander Phil Hughes left Thursday's game against the Chicago White Sox in the fourth inning after being hit in the right leg by a comebacker from Adam Dunnreports Rhett Bollinger of (video below). X-rays were negative and he hopes to make his next start. Right-hander Samuel Deduno replaced Hughes as the Twins lost 5-2.

Red Sox Injury Update: David Ortiz exits with back spasms

The Boston Red Sox lost to the Toronto Blue Jays today by the score of 8-0, getting only a single hit off Marcus Stroman, who picked up his sixth win of the season. The loss dropped the Red Sox to 47-55 on the season, last in the American League East. At 19th in the league in runs scored and 20th in batting average, the Red Sox have struggled much of the season offensively. Designated hitter David Ortiz, who has been a bright spot this season, left the game in the ninth inning with back spasms. 

Blue Jays Injury Update: Edwin Encarnacion, Adam Lind

Toronto Blue Jays first baseman/DH Edwin Encarnacion and first baseman Adam Lind could both rejoin the lineup early next week -- without needing Minor League rehab assignments. This message comes from Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos and manager John Gibbons as the two players have shown steady progress in their recoveries and the Blue Jays need their big bats.

Yankees Injury Update: Mark Teixeira DL stint possible

New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira sat out Thursday afternoon's game with the Texas Rangers with a left lat strain, meaning that he missed the entire four-game series that began Monday. At this point, the Yankees still consider him day-to-day, but manager Joe Girardi implied Thursday that if Teixeira does not heal enough to play within a few more days, then another stint on the disabled list is possible.

Yankees Injury Update: Masahiro Tanaka showing 'marginal improvement'

New York Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka received a platelet-rich plasma injection on July 14 in hopes to reduce pain and swelling in his right elbow. Tanaka, though, is still feeling discomfort in the elbow. The Yankees, however, continue their optimism that Tanaka will will return to the mound by September.

Dodgers Injury Update: Hanley Ramirez, Yasiel Puig

Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Hanley Ramirez and right fielder Yasiel Puig were both hit by pitches in the left hand in recent games, causing them to miss time. Ramirez took a fastball on July 20, and Puig took one on the 19th. Ramirez has not played at all since getting hit, and Puig had only one plate appearance Wednesday. After an off day Thursday, both could return to the lineup Friday.

Mets Injury Update: Ruben Tejada exits after taking pitch to helmet

The New York Mets defeated the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday by the score of 3-2. The win improved the Mets to 48-53, eight games behind the Washington Nationals in the National League East. David Wright got half of the Mets' hits, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. There was a scary moment when shortstop Ruben Tejada got hit in the head by a pitch. He was 0-for-1 at the time and left the game for Eric Campbell, who came in to pinch run and stayed in to play shortstop. 

Diamondbacks Injury Update: Brad Ziegler unavailable after being hit by line drive

The Arizona Diamondbacks enter a weekend series against the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday coming off an 11-5 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday. The loss dropped the Diamondbacks to 44-58, fourth in the National League West. A big problem this season has been a pitching staff that is 26th in the Major Leagues in ERA. A bright spot on the staff has been reliever Brad Ziegler, but the Diamondbacks were without Ziegler on Wednesday after being hit in the ribs with a line drive in Tuesday's game.

Athletics Injury Updates: Yoenis Cespedes, Brandon Moss, Alberto Callaspo

The Oakland Athletics won Wednesday nights game 9-7 against the Houston Astros thanks to Yoenis Cespedes, who hit two home runs, however; he left the game due to a sprained right thumb when he had an awkward fall at the plate in the fifth inning. Brandon Moss spun while tagging speedy Jose Altuve in the eighth and he seemed to be in pain but he did not come out reported by Susan Slusser from The Drumbeat. Infielder Alberto Callaspo could come back on Sunday according to Carl Steward.
